Preparing for a New Adventure: Medical Service in PNG

As I contemplated about what to write and how to start, a mix of different feelings (positive and negative) rushed through my head. A lot of time has passed, since we decided to embark on our journey to do medical missions. It has been a long process with smiles and tears. Yet looking back, it has prepared us to be serving the beautiful people of Papua New Guinea.

We are excited and at the same time a bit anxious as we are still in the process of working off our enormous To-Do List, that seems to be getting longer each day.

The kids are about to end their kindergarden year and are looking forward to the summer. They have been asking a lot of questions about PNG and want to see many pictures of the jungle, animals and the people.

Rosie and I are planning to take some medical courses in preparation, while we are still in Europe. I am about to conclude my work as a pediatrician at the clinic in the upcoming weeks, as well as my time at the Salvation Army, where I worked as a general practitioner for the past months.

We are now in the phase of wrapping up our things and finishing off well.

It feels a bit daunting to think about not earning money in the future and to be fully dependent on support of others in the years ahead. We are in the process of learning to trust as we are following this heartfelt calling. We are leaving everything behind that we know and love, to bring hope to those that suffer and are broken.

In some ways we feel so unprepared for what is in front of us. But small steps have led us to this point.

Together with our kids we have been serving at different parts of this world. May it be in the jungles of Guatemala, where we did mobile clinics and home consultations in remote villages, where doctors hadn’t been for a whole year toe to COVID, or helping out at a health clinic in Vanuatu. We saw our children thrive in these environments. They were always close to watch us as we were attending to people of very poor communities. They had so much fun playing with the local kids. Having said this, we hope they will prosper in the new environment ahead.

With this blog we want to take you with us on this journey.

We hope to write regular updates to let you know what is happening and what is on our minds.

Please don’t hesitate to write if you want to know more or just want to get in touch with us. We would love to hear back from you.

Thank you for joining us, it means a lot.
